STOP in the Name of Cupcakes

The line at Georgetown Cupcakes at 2:00 today

If the color of the traffic light in the picture above weren't enough of a symbol, there is overwhelming evidence in this scene to pre-order or avoid Georgetown Cupcake entirely. May I present Exhibit A: The line that stretches far into the annals of Georgetown. Exhibit B: The bouncer now posted outside. Exhibit C (though not visible in this frame): An even more congested traffic scene--both foot and auto--on M Street.

Yes, Reality TV has definitely had an impact. But on the bright side, it has spawned some entrepreneurship with individuals selling bottled water to the masses waiting well over an hour in line on a hot Sunday afternoon.

I think it is time for the next trend!

  1. Choose Hello Cupcake or the Bethesda branch of G'town Cupcake instead.

  2. baked and wired..is right around the corner...and the cupcakes are delightful..

  3. I wonder how much of the madness can be attributed to their relocation and how much to the show. There were lines outside of their old shop, but not consistently.

  4. Have these people never had a cupcake before? You can make 18 cupcakes at home for the price of one from Georgetown Cupcake.

  5. Yeeeah... I don't get it. The cupcakes are meh, okay, and the TV show is painful to watch. In my mind Baked and Wired, Bakeshop VA and Red Velvet are just as good and come without the ridiculous line.

  6. Check out Cake Love on 24th St.. OPRAH Loves his cakes...

  7. Sorry 14th Street is the location for Cake Love...
    Happy Monday

  8. I think everyone should switch to pops. Pleasant Pops (@pleasantpops) has a truck on the way...

  9. isn't the macaron supposed to be next?

i've done two cupcake taste tests for my baking blog in dc asking the locals opinions, baked and wired and cake love win out. gtc has excellent branding and excellent publicists, but they really aren't the best cupcake in town.

  10. GT seems to have the best icing out of the DC area and the lava fudge cupcake is my personal favorite in the city, redvelvet is also good, a bit pricer. However, cake love is all hype in my opinion and I would go as far as to say that the cupcakes there are bad, I've had several I didn't want to finish.

  11. I have a forthcoming post on a new macaroon place coming up... maybe it is the next trend and hopefully sans reality show! And those pops sounds delish!

Having tried all of the cupcake places in DC including Cake Love, Hello Cupcake, Red Velvet, etc, (did I miss any?!) I do like Baked and Wired the best --

And as much as I hate the line and the hype G-town cupcake also makes a great cupcake.

  12. The word "cupcake" makes me wanna snarf down anything frosted in a 3 mile radius.

But I find most "cupcake stores" to have dry cupcakes... mine being vastly superior to anything I could shell $3.50 on. My secret ingredient? A full stick of butter in the mix. You bet your ass my cupcakes are moist!

  13. Larry's in Dupont Circle is far superior, and he sells sweet cream ice cream that's to die for.

  14. Try Divinely Decadent on 12th Street NE. Just as mediocre, just as overpriced (almost). Easier parking, smaller storefront, less hype.

  15. Something Sweet Bakery on Macomb St, NW is by far the best I've had in DC. Red Velvet in Gallery Place is also very good. GTC is mediocre, as is Hello Cupcake. And CakeLove is not good at all. IMHO :)

  16. sorry y'all...cupcakes are here to stay: http://cupcakesomg.blogspot.com/2010/08/are-so-new-cupcake.html

i agree though--pre-order or DEATH! if it's Georgetown Cupcake you want, just order delivery. Otherwise, Baked and Wired in great and Hello Cupcake is in Dupont. No lines, terrific flavors and, might I add, bigger cupcakes! There's also Lavender Moon Bakery in Alexandria. Stay away from Red Velvet, Larry's, and Bakeshop (unless you're getting the banana pudding!).

  17. I'll take the Red Velvet from Fancy Cakes by Leslie in Bethesda ANY day. They have the best icing in the area. Also, Georgetown Cupcakes are made of people.

  18. Annals? Dictionary?

  19. Furin's cupcakes: they're bigger AND better.

  20. Is it bad that I hate everyone waiting in line for a dumb cupcake? I see them everyday on my way home, and it just grates on my nerves! I mean really! Lines for a F**kin' cupcake? Seriously!?

How about go home, bake cupcakes yourself (that probably taste better) and spend time with your family?

  21. I can't believe people are still pushing Cakelove. There was a time when they had the best cupcakes in town: when they were the ONLY cupcakes in town. I wouldn't feed those heavy, dry batterballs to a dog now that there are so many other, better options.

And while no cupcake is worth doing what those people in that picture are doing, GT cupcakes really are divine.

  22. Cakelove is probably the worst cupcake I have ever had. Used to Live at New Hampshire and V and would rather drive to GT, wait in line for 20 mins and drive back then walk a block over to Love Cafe to get one of their cupcakes.

  23. eat an apple...it's better for you.

  24. First choice Baked and Wired, second choice Curbside Cupcake. GT are smaller and just bland compared to the other two places.

  25. jesus. Can DC get a trend of its own one of these days? cupcakes were a trend in new york 10 years ago. Move on to something else, or at least try and keep up with the trend as it's happening.

  26. I work in GTown half a block down from Baked and Wired. I often want to yell out the window at these people on my way home to enlighten them about the wonder that is Baked and Wired. SO MUCH better and so much less annoying.

Oh well, if these people want to waste hours of their lives for the worst cupcake in DC, let them.

  27. its amazing that the folks here can't give credit where credit is due. GC is the best and I've tried every cupcake place in the area, twice. Most are either dry, taste like they came out the box, or even worse, not sweet at all. And I'm surprised that Cake Love is still in business

    ReplyDelete
  28. Baked and Wired is not better than GC. Their cupcakes are just bigger and more pricier. But they're better than the other places other than GC

  29. As someone who works there, I promise the employee working on the door isn't a bouncer. Because of the long lines, we like to have someone at the door to greet people and give them menus... and we NEED someone there to make sure the door stays shut (so the frosting doesn't melt) and we keep store occupancy within the limits of fire code. They may jokingly call themselves the cupcake bouncers, but they're just employees who have to stand out in the heat.

  30. Ughhh I have still never had a cupcake from there and I'm SO annoyed by the fuss, that I will probably never attempt it again.
I've tried to go there on at least 4 different occasions.

  31. worth every bite! We Just got a dozen from Hello cucpake this weekend, and while some of them are awesome (choclate hzaelnut and carrot) my hubby and I both agreed that GC was WAY better. They were SO moist. The blueberry and strawberry ones? Divine.

i think the trend is a great one, and yummy one! Here's to Georgetown cupcake!
